Vis
The island of Vis is the most protruding Croatian island with an area of 90.30 km2. It is surrounded by an archipelago of smaller islands and islets: Ravnik, Budikovac, Bisevo, Svetac, Jabuka, Brusnik and Palagruza. The nearest island to the east is the greenest Croatian island – the island of Korcula.
Vis is known for its outstanding natural beauty, white beaches, hidden coves and historic architecture. It is the perfect destination for a relaxing vacation for those wanting to avoid the crowds. It is still relatively off the mainstream tourist radar.
The tourism on Vis began to develop significantly with the demilitarisation of the island at the beginning of the war (1991-1995) in Croatia. So, it has been only 15 years ago that both the island and its town opened for the visit of tourists. This has allowed to island to remain underdeveloped unlike other modern tourist destinations.
Visitors are attracted to experience the notorious deep sea fishing, drink locally produced wines and eat in the plentiful traditional restaurants for which the Island is famous for. Spread across the island are many historic ruins and palaces which are free to roam and can be seen in many of Croatia’s promotional material.
The nature on the island is fit for a postcard; displaying green mountains, white beaches and deserted bays. Many sailors come from afar to witness the Vis’ history and natural beauty.
If we combine the unique historical, cultural, and natural heritage with the beautiful crystal clear sea, stunning hidden beaches, bays and islands, it is clear why Vis is becoming on of the most popular tourist destination for those who want to experience the traditional Mediterranean way of life.
